ONCE, IN A PHONE CONVERSATION
been having a lot of real "bad" (in a different kind of way) phone convos lately. bad as in me and the person i am talking to barely hear and understand each other. thanks to my bad accent and the weak reception we have here in the 3rd world. i try to be very careful with what i say. i have always failed at communicating orally. i've said the meanest thing i never meant to say, once, in a phone conversation.
back when i lived in la, i was kind of seeing this drop dead gorgeous guy. yes, everyone called him that. get over it now. due to his work schedule and my work schedule, and the distance between where we lived (he lived in san diego), we spent more time on the phone than we did seeing each other in person. the problem was that i was an fob and still having probs speaking english and he spoke slang. we could barely understand each other. i tried letting him know that i'm having a hard time as much as he was.. often we needed to either spell out or repeat what we were saying 93837464 times before we get it (grrrr..the headache!) . it didn't get any better, so i struggled to decipher what i could from the few words i understood, and make appropriate or ambiguous responses. it seemed to be working..one weekend, we were supposed to take a trip with a few friends, and he was going to call and arrange a place to meet. i didn't hear from him, so i went on my own...when he finally called me on monday, i was a little miffed. he started to explain why he had ditched out on our plans, but i couldn't understand a word he was saying. i countered with "well, that's no excuse!" there was a long silence, and then he told me he had to go. i didn't hear from him again after that, but i shrugged it off, as it hadn't been very serious anyway. a couple weeks later, a mutual friend confonted me, and called me a couple of not-so-nice names. when i finally got her to explain, i learned that drop dead gorgeous guy's father had died the day before our date, and he had (obviously) been too busy and upset to call me. and to that, i had said, "well, that's no excuse."
it may just have been the meanest breakup on record.
maybe i shouldn't be allowed to use the phone...

I don't know that that's supposed to be funny, but I did laugh. Mostly at the "maybe I shouldn't be allowed to use the phone." That was a harsh break-up on both ends. It's not like you meant it. Haha, you're so cute.
