a little boy plants a pumpkin seed and (over)waters it zealously. the little shoot comes up, drowns and dies. with all the faith of a four year old, he continues to water the cup faithfully, and waits in vain for the plant to grow. is it wrong to buy a pumpkin plant and let him think his plant finally flourished?

I don't think it's wrong when the kid is that young. For the same reasons as parents replace the goldfish when their child forgets to feed it.
